Design

The Pelican Mustang 100x is a spacious 10 feet long, with a cockpit measuring 47 inches long and 25 inches wide. But despite being a roomy kayak it’s also lightweight at just 39lbs.

The hull is made from a high-quality multi-layered material called RAM-X (or crosslinked polyethylene), that is unique to Pelican products.

This material was designed to be resistant even during the hardest of hits, allowing the kayak to retain its shape even after heavy impact. The exterior of the Mustang 100x also has a UV-protected finish that protects the kayak from sun damage.

The Pelican Mustang 100x is a thoroughly modern kayak, carefully designed to meet the needs of modern kayakers.

We’ll discuss its features in more detail below, but it has adjustable footrests and kneepads, ergonomic carrying handles, a premium ERGOFORM seating system, and even a smartphone holder.

If you’re looking for a kayak you can take fishing, then the Mustang 100x is for you! It also has two flush mount rod holders, with a removable storage compartment in the front and a tank in the bank.

But even if you’re not planning on going fishing in the Mustang 100x, it’s high-quality design and features designed for comfort make it ideal for the most adventurous of kayakers.

What features does the Pelican Mustang 100x have?

The Pelican Mustang 100x is a real crowd-pleaser, as it’s not only lightweight and sleek, but versatile too. By really paying attention to the small details, Pelican have created a premium kayak that we’re sure you’ll appreciate. But how do its features set the Mustang 100x apart from its rivals?

Let’s take a closer look.

Pelican Mustang 100x Review

Adjustable footrests: This feature is what makes the Mustang 100x score top marks for convenience. As we all know, how tall you are can play a big part in how comfortable a kayak is to sit in.

It’s always been a bit of a lottery - but not with the Mustang 100x! The adjustable footrests can accommodate a variety of kayakers, and you can set them as high or as low as you like.

This is also what makes the Mustang 100x versatile, as any friends or family who want to take it out for a whirl can also feel comfortable and not cramped.

Spacious and secure: Fans of the Mustang 100x often praise how spacious this kayak is, which is notable since a lot of ‘sit-in’ kayaks can feel cramped and claustrophobic. Its 47 x 25 x 14-inch dimensions and spacious cockpit make you feel both liberated and secure.

No mean feat! Plus, the ERGOFORM seating system is made from a hard-working fabric that has been specially designed to give you plenty of padding and cushioning while water-rafting.

Convenient upgrades: Pelican have really put a lot of thought into the little details when it comes to the Mustang 100x. For example, it’s one of those rare fishing kayaks that has a bottle holder!

Of course, no matter what you’re doing it's important to stay hydrated and Pelican have obviously taken this into consideration when designing the Mustang 100x. As well as adjustable footrests you’ll also find adjustable knee pads for extra comfort and coziness.

No need to buy extra knee pads like you would with some other kayaks! Plus, there’s also a storage hatch with a bungee cord.

This cord helps you achieve a flexible grab anytime, whether it is stem to stern, interior, or exterior. These may seem like simple upgrades, but add them all up and they really enhance your kayak experience.

Twin-arched multi-chine hull: One of the most impressive features of the Mustang 100x is its twin-arched multi-chine hull. This hull gives you all the stability, speed and tracking you need when hitting the water with your kayak.

The Mustang 100x is also resilient and is built to be extra durable when it brushes up against boulders or rocks. Even if your kayak takes a couple of hits from some boulders you’re unlikely to see a scratch or dent! It’s also been designed to be easy to maneuver and has track settings to keep you safe during potentially dangerous situations.

Lightweight and portable: At only 39lbs, the Mustang 100x is one of the lightest kayaks around. But this should hardly be surprising, as Pelican products are known for being more lightweight than their rivals.

The Mustang 100x is extremely portable, and carrying it to your car or other vehicle is a piece of cake. You can also bring a lot with you into the kayak without it affecting the weight too much thanks to the kayak itself weighing very little.

But not only does its lightweight properties make it portable and convenient, but also faster than other kayaks.

Perfect for fishing: If you want to go fishing while in your kayak, then the Mustang 100x is the ideal kayak for you. The cockpit contains two fishing rod holders, while the front of the kayak has a sturdy compartment and the back of the kayak has an equally sturdy tank.

Plus, the storage compartment is removable, so you can take it out of the kayak if you don’t need it. Just make sure to remove this carefully before you step into the kayak! The Mustang 100x is also spacious enough that you can bring an ice chest with you to store your catch.

But even if you’re not using the kayak for fishing, you can still make use of the plenty of space in the kayak. However, if you are using the kayak for fishing try to keep the tank dry when reeling in your kayak. Bringing dry bags with you is the best way to achieve this.

Is the Pelican Mustang 100x value for money?

Considering the amount of premium features offered by the Pelican Mustang 100x we would definitely say it’s value for money! While it isn’t the cheapest option out there, it doesn’t break the bank either.

But the upgrades made to the Mustang 100x totally justify its price. Some kayaks are hundreds of dollars more expensive than the Mustang 100x with nowhere near the amount of features.

You have a limited lifetime warranty with the Pelican Mustang 100x that covers any damage to your kayak. If you do need to speak to somebody from Pelican about issues with the Mustang 100x they also have excellent customer service.

Again, this kind of warranty along with incredible customer service and the advanced features of the Mustang 100x definitely make it terrific value for money.

The Disadvantages of the Pelican Mustang 100x

The Pelican Mustang 100x has a lot going for it, but - just like everything - it’s not perfect and does have a couple of areas of improvement.

A lot of Mustang 100x owners have expressed disappointment in how it’s a one-person kayak. This may seem surprising given how spacious the Mustang 100x is, but most kayaks have enough room to comfortably accommodate at least two people as well as their belongings and travel items.

However, altering the Mustang 100x to accommodate more than one person would make it heavier, and its lightweight design is part of what makes it so great.

Furthemore, the seating is not waterproof. If water splashes in your kayak - very likely to happen if you’re navigating fast-flowing streams or narrow bodies of water - then any items you’ve brought with you are going to get wet.

If you’re an intermediate or experienced kayaker then this is unlikely to be an issue as you’re used to maintaining firm control of a kayak even in the most complicated situations and the tightest of spaces.

But for the average kayaker this is more likely to be a concern. If you’re a beginner, be mindful of what you bring with you and bring along dry bags to ensure your items are waterproof and safe from damage.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a lone kayaker, then the Pelican Mustang 100x is ideal. It’ll give you more than enough space and keep you comfortable during long days on the water. It has good tracking, and if you’re into fishing, can accommodate fishing equipment exceptionally well.

It’s also an extremely stable and secure kayak, and if you’re shopping on a budget or are a recreational kayaker who doesn’t want to break the bank, the Mustang 100x offers excellent value for money.
